So as it happens we are Dome building experts! and many people often ask us, “So Why build a Dome?” Geodesic domes have been around for a long time but still today few people realize their astonishing advantages over square buildings. In fact they offer so many advantages over conventional square buildings one should be asking why build a square? In an age when conservation of energy is in such high demand people are looking for all kinds of ways to make square buildings more thermal efficient, from low E windows to increased insulating values but they are overlooking the most dramatic way to improve thermal efficiency. A well built dome can be anywhere from 30 to 50 percent more thermal efficient than a square building when comparing the same materials in a different configuration! The dome shape creates a thermal dish that acts to maintain its temperature easier than a square. Most importantly it takes 25 percent less surface area to enclose and cover the equivalent floor space, so the decreased surface area allows for less thermal exchange resulting in increased thermal efficiency.
Domes have structural advantages as well, they are particularly well suited for hurricane prone climates as their aerodynamic shape dramatically reduces forces from wind loading and tests in the artic have proven them ideal for heavy snow loads. The geodesic dome is arguably the strongest geometric shape to build with.
